Use a gauge chart to measure performance against a goal that you set, like total annual sales or number of sales opportunities.
Set the number that the gauge starts at, often 0, and the goal — the number that indicates the gauge has reached 100 and is full.
The gauge color is based the percentage of the goal reached and the ranges you define.
Like all Quickbase charts, gauge charts are interactive; click the colored portion of the gauge to view the records included in the measurement. You can also apply dynamic filters to gauge charts.
To print your chart or save it as an image, click the menu in the top right of the chart:
Note: The gauge chart doesn’t have a built-in way to express a numeric percentage. In a standalone report it’s just the rainbow-shaped graphic with the data you’re measuring; in a dashboard it’s the same data, optionally with a ring-shaped graphic and a value showing change since a previous period.
To create a gauge chart:
-
Open the table in the table bar, click REPORTS & CHARTS and then click + New.
-
Select Chart and click Create.
-
In the Basics section, Name your chart and give it a Description.
Tip: Select Show description on chart page so others can easily understand the purpose of your chart.
-
Select Gauge as the chart Type.
-
Decide what the gauge measures:
-
Select the field you want to measure and decide whether you want to sum or average the values.
-
Enter an Axis label. This displays in the center of the gauge.
-
-
-
Enter the number that the gauge will Start at.
-
Will the goal be a plain number? If so choose Number from the Goal type dropdown. If the goal will be based on data from your table, choose Data value.
-
Choose a field or enter the Goal number. When you choose a field, the goal becomes the sum or average of that field across all records in the table.
The gauge is empty when the value you're measuring is less than the Start number. It's full when the value is equal to or greater than the Goal.
-
-
Set the range values. These values indicate the color of the gauge.
-
If you chose to measure a Calculated column or set it as the goal, select define a calculated column, label it, create the formula, and select the type.
-
If desired, filter to display only certain types of data or data that meets conditions you set.
-
Save the chart as Personal (only you can view it) or Common (others can view it). Optionally, you can also assign the report to a group.
About setting ranges
The gauge displays in a single color. The color is determined by the percentage of the goal reached and the range you define for each color.
For example, you might choose red if the value is less than 25% of your goal, yellow if the value is from 25% up to 50% of your goal, and green if the value is greater than 50% of your goal.
Enter a percentage of the goal to define each color range | |
---|---|
Low: Values less than the percentage you enter here display in the color defined for Low. | ![]() |
Medium: Values up to the percentage you enter here display in the color defined for Medium. | ![]() |
High: Values above the Medium range display in the color defined for High. | ![]() |
To define a calculated column to display in the chart
You have to make a report formula and then its name appears in the list of available fields. Before the report formula:
About customizing colors for gauge ranges
You can customize the colors for Low, Medium, and High ranges in the Legend at the top of the Chart Details area.
Example
This gauge measures total annual sales against the goal of 1,400,000.
This gauge chart is defined to:
-
Measure the Sales, which is summed.
-
Start at 0 and become full at its Goal of 1,400,000.
-
Display the following colors:
-
Low (red), if the values are up to 50% of the goal.
-
Medium (yellow), if the values are above 50% but less than 90% of the goal.
-
High (green), if the values are above 90% of the goal.
